Who is this for?

SALCs in Japan are awesome spaces where you can use English and other languages in real ways, meet new people, and take control of your own learning.

At these SALCs, students are not just learners—they’re also leaders, helpers, and creators. Some centers run events, others have cool conversation spaces or games, and many let you shape your own study goals. Check out the profiles below to see what each SALC offers. 🎓Beyond Borders Plaza – Ritsumeikan University (Kinugasa)

📍 A space for language and cultural exchange at Ritsumeikan University Kinugasa Campus and on insta!

🗣️ What is it?

At BBP, you can meet students from around the world, improve your language skills, and join fun events. It’s a free space where you can talk, share ideas, and learn about different cultures. Whether you want to practice speaking other languages, prepare to study abroad, or just make international friends, BBP is here to support you!

🌱 New

You can visit the Language Learning Support Desk at BBP to get help from friendly facilitators. They can answer your questions about how to study English, prepare for exams, or improve your academic writing. It’s a great place to get advice and boost your learning!

🤝 Your space

Student staff members join the BBP Project Team. This team plans events and activities for students who want to meet people from different cultures, study abroad, or improve their language skills.

🎓E-CO (English Cafe at Otemon) – Otemon Gakuin University

📍 A warm and welcoming space for practicing English, and other languages, and connecting with community on campus.

🗣️ What is it?

It’s is a friendly and flexible space that supports learning English and other languages. You can try advising sessions, one-on-one practice sessions with teachers, workshops, events, and real conversations. Meet people, get advice, and use languages in fun and practical ways

E-CO is focusing more on study abroad support and helping students explore language learning beyond the classroom. There are more activities to help you prepare for international experiences

E-CO is powered by student leaders! Conversation facilitators and volunteers help run events and create a positive space. Student voices are a big part of how E-CO grows

🎓 English Lounge – Hirosaki University

📍 A bright and busy space where students and teachers learn together.

🗣️ What is it?

It’s part of your classes—and more! The Lounge has speaking corners, workshops, advising, and fun activities. You might see high school students, international students, and teachers all chatting together.

🎯 Why go?

  • Get English support or practice
  • Join workshops or seminars
  • Take part in fun games or social events
  • Try a TOEFL or TOEIC session

🌱 New

Try the new ‘activity reports’ to reflect on your self-study. You can also play a silent communication board game created just for this lounge!

🤝 Your space

Student workers help at the desk, support peers, and lead conversation corners. Feedback helps keep the Lounge fresh and useful.

🎓 English Resource Center (ERC) – Saitama University

📍 A hybrid SALC where you can join in from campus—or anywhere!

🗣️ What is it?

It’s a flexible space where you can meet online or in person, talk with advisers, borrow resources, or just hang out and use English. There’s even a 360° camera to help online users feel present!

🌱 New

Students studying abroad have given virtual campus tour using the 360° camera. It inspired others to think about going overseas

Students shape the ERC by suggesting ideas and becoming advisers assistants. It’s a space where learners support each other and grow together

🎓 e-space – Konan Women’s University

📍 A friendly language learning space at campus and on insta!

🗣️ What is it?

e-space is a safe and welcoming place to improve your English, grow as a person, and find friends to share your learning journey. You can feel comfortable practicing English in our community.

  • Enjoy movies or online resources

🌱 New

Exchange diaries let you share ideas, activities, and advice in English. At the end, you leave a question for the next student. This helps you practice English writing if you’re shy about speaking, and makes you feel connected with other learners.

Trained student staff make e-space great! English Cafe staff lead lunchtime conversations, e-space staff assist with all your needs, and leaders work closely with teachers on new ideas.

🎓 iFloor – Reitaku University

📍 Find it on campus – comfy chairs, friendly faces, and lots of ways to practice English!

🗣️ What is it?

It’s a fun, welcoming space where students use English in real conversations, join workshops, and work with international teachers and student staff. You can borrow books or games, relax, or try new things with friends

Want to learn English your way? iFloor now has a course called TALL (Transformative Autonomous Language Learning), where you choose your goals, pick your resources, and get credit for building your own study plan

Student staff run events, write newsletters, host a podcast, and keep iFloor’s social media active. You can be part of it too!

🎓 Lounge MELT – Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University

📍 A cozy place on campus where English, culture, and friendship meet.

🗣️ What is it?

It’s a friendly space where you can join language exchanges, talk with advisers, borrow materials, and relax with friends. You’ll find a mix of English and Japanese, and everyone’s welcome.

There’s now a cultural exchange option during teletandem sessions, where students talk about their home cultures and learn from each other

Some SALCs on this page participated in the SALC Showcase at the PanSIG 2025 Conference on autonomy and agency in language education, held at Kanda University of International Studies between May 16th and 18th in Chiba, Japan.
