Interest in language learner autonomy has flourished for over 40 years, particularly in Asia. Common definitions mention learners’ capacities or qualities. There are standardised research instruments and deep ties to related fields like self-access learning. Nevertheless, a recent scoping review identified that, even today, the central concept remains poorly defined. These presentations offer an overdue conceptual reappraisal.
